Let's first understand, what is Pranayama ?
Pranayama is generally defined as breath control. It is comprised of two roots: "prana" plus "ayama". Prana means 'vital energy' or 'life force', it is the force which exists in all things and ayama means 'extension' or 'expansion'. Thus, the word pranayama means 'extension or expansion of the dimension of prana'. Pranayama utilizes breathing to influence the flow of prana in the nadis or the energy channels of the pranamaya kosha or the energy body.
In general terms, pranayama is the practice of using controlled breathing to regulate the flow of energy in your body. By practicing pranayama, you can help expand your consciousness and strengthen your immune system, which makes you more resilient to stress.
Many people think that pranayama is just a relaxation technique, but it's so much more than that! In fact, many yogis consider it to be their lifeline—it's how they maintain their focus, stay grounded, and find personal balance.
